Title: Sporting Director
Department: Soccer Operations
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports To: General Manager
Last Revision Date: May 23, 2025
The Opportunity:
As Union Omaha continues to grow, there is a need to bring a Sporting Director on board to oversee the sporting side of the club in its entirety and report directly to the General Manager.
Key Areas of Influence:
Working closely with, and overseeing, the Head Coach, the Sporting Director will take responsibility for creating and delivering sustainable success off the back of two strong seasons, codifying the ‘Union Omaha Way’ and ensuring all decisions are club decisions. This includes working with the Head Coach to define a recruitment strategy that looks to capitalize on his abilities on the grass though stabilizing first team spending. As such, the new Sporting Director will oversee and manage a team of teams including a network of remote scouts, the Soccer Operations Manager and the Equipment & Clubhouse Operations Manager.
With strong financial acumen and the ability to speak both the language of performance and of club leadership, a successful candidate will be able to fit seamlessly into a decision-making triumvirate with the General Manager and Head Coach, bringing complimentary skills and experience to both and being able to advocate for either, as required. As such, they will both own and operate the sporting budget and understand its place within the wider club finances and bring expert knowledge that will help the club continue its progress and ever-growing fan base.
Key Qualifications:
Bringing evidence of having worked in the wider US Soccer landscape, USL and, ideally, League One, the new Sporting Director will take accountability and responsibility for dealing with all elements of negotiations with the League. They will also understand all necessary league and FIFA sanctioning regulations as well as USL CBA and player finances and welfare in detail.
With an appreciation of the cadence of the sport, context and what it is to operate in a lean but ambitious team, they will be a clear and straightforward communicator, great team player and selfless leader always ready to roll their sleeves up. Bringing humility, a strong values base and the ability to make club-first decisions, the successful candidate will think strategically both in the long-term and about day-to-day logistics, bringing about necessary change, big and small, and growing with the club as it continues its journey.
Working Conditions:
This job operates in an office environment located at an outdoor facility. This individual routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and copiers. During games and events, this individual may be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
