PART I: SUMMARY OF POSITION

This job assignment is accountable for assisting in instructing student athletes in a specific sports activity and providing leadership in helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship and an increased level of self-esteem.

PART II: MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Current teacher or substitute certification in the State of Illinois OR complete the American Sports Education Program (ASEP) coaching certification set forth by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA)

B. CREDENTIALS:

  1. Bloodborne Pathogens Training/Hepatitis B Shots Series Training
  2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
  3. Valid Illinois Driver’s License
  4. First Aid/CPR Certification preferred

C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of prevention, care, and treatment of minor athletic injuries.
  2. Knowledge of coaching techniques, human behavior, and athlete development.
  3. Knowledge of the specific sport, including rules, strategies, and safety practices.
  4. Knowledge of district athletic program goals and the Code of Ethics for Coaches.
  5. Knowledge of state, federal, and Board of Education policies related to student conduct and discipline.
  6. Strong coaching and instructional skills.
  7. Effective oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  8. Active listening skills that support positive athlete relationships.
  9. Organizational and problem-solving skills.
  10. Leadership skills that promote teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain positive rapport with students.
  12. Ability to de-escalate conflicts and diffuse challenging situations appropriately.
  13. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others.
  14. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  15. Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the coaching assignment.

PART III: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practices in accordance with District policy and Illinois High School Association (IHSA) rules and regulations.
  2. Assist the Head Coach in coaching student-athletes in individual and team skills necessary for successful athletic performance.
  3. Support the organization and effective use of practice time, including drills, repetition of fundamentals, and skill development activities.
  4. Assist in supervising and managing student-athlete behavior during practices, competitions, and athletic events.
  5. Promote and enforce discipline, sportsmanship, and ethical conduct consistent with District expectations and athletic codes of conduct.
  6. Assist in maintaining a safe environment by monitoring facilities, equipment, and activity areas during all athletic activities.
  7. Take reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  8. Assist with team administration tasks, including roster management, end-of-season inventory, and awards information as requested.
  9. Assist the Head Coach, as assigned, with scheduling contests, events, and transportation.
  10. Ensure athletes meet eligibility, conduct, and participation requirements in accordance with District and IHSA regulations.
  11. Ensure athletes adhere to appropriate dress, equipment, and safety standards for practices and competitions.
  12. Assist in the proper care, storage, and maintenance of athletic equipment and uniforms.
  13. Share responsibility with the Head Coach for preparation and upkeep of fields, courts, or practice areas.
  14. Maintain accurate and timely records as required, including attendance, accident reports, and insurance documentation.
  15. Follow all procedures, expectations, and protocols outlined in the District and Round Lake High School Coaches Handbook.
  16. Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for student-athletes.
  17. Recommend the purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as appropriate.
  18. Complete assigned duties in a timely, organized, and professional manner.
  19. Maintain reliable attendance and availability as required by District policy and the athletic schedule.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.
