SUMMARY: The Head Coach will develop, implement, and promote a successful high school girls soccer program that emphasizes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and personal responsibility. This position works directly with student-athletes to foster a safe and supportive environment that aligns with the mission and values of Hopkins High School and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Plan, organize, and conduct practices, games, and team meetings.
- Provide instruction on soccer fundamentals, techniques, conditioning, and competitive strategies appropriate for high school athletes.
- Promote and model sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, discipline, and leadership both on and off the field.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and team events.
- Oversee assistant coaches in organizing drills, practices, equipment, and team operations.
- Support student-athlete academic performance and monitor eligibility requirements.
- Execute the promotion and recruitment of student-athletes for the girls soccer program.
- Maintain compliance with all Hopkins School District and Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) rules, regulations, and policies.
- Communicate effectively with assistant coaches, the athletic director, athletes, parents, and school personnel.
- Manage team equipment, uniforms, and program inventory.
- Coordinate game preparation, scouting, and competitive strategies.
- Ensure proper supervision and safety of athletes during all team activities.
- Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Previous soccer coaching or competitive playing experience is preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational or athletic setting is preferred.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
- Valid Minnesota driver's license.
- Current MSHSL coaching certification (or ability to obtain prior to season start).
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge:
- Rules, strategies, and fundamentals of soccer.
- MSHSL and district athletic policies and procedures.
- Principles of athlete development, conditioning, and injury prevention.
- Child development and positive coaching strategies.
- Equity, inclusion, and cultural competency in athletics.
Skills:
- Ability to teach and demonstrate soccer skills and strategies effectively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with athletes, parents, and staff.
- Ability to motivate and mentor student-athletes.
- Organizational skills for managing practices, equipment, and competitions.
- Ability to enforce rules and maintain discipline respectfully and fairly.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The position requires mobility to work on athletic fields, stamina to actively demonstrate techniques and conduct practices, and the ability to stand and move for extended periods of time. The coach must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds of equipment. Adequate vision and hearing are necessary to observe athlete performance and ensure safe participation. Effective communication is required to provide clear instruction during practices and games.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily on outdoor athletic fields and occasionally in indoor training facilities. Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and physical activity is expected. Evening and weekend hours are required during the season. Travel to away games, tournaments, and team events is required.
Hours & Compensation:
70 days total.
Stipend Range: $6,509 - $7,506
