SUMMARY: The Assistant Athletic Trainer – MLS NEXT supports the delivery of comprehensive sports medicine services to New England Revolution Academy athletes, including injury and illness prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and on-field medical coverage. Working under the direction of Sports Medicine leadership and in collaboration with Academy Athletic Trainers, team physicians, Performance staff, and Technical staff, the position supports athlete health and safe participation throughout training and competition.

 

The Assistant Athletic Trainer maintains medical documentation, coordinates assigned athlete care and rehabilitation, supports Sports Medicine operations, and provides coverage for Academy activities. The position may also support New England Revolution first-team and MLS NEXT Pro activities as assigned.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Provide athletic training services for New England Revolution Academy athletes, including injury and illness prevention, evaluation, immediate and emergency care, treatment, therapeutic intervention, rehabilitation, and medical referrals within established medical protocols and scope of practice.
  2. Implement and progress rehabilitation programs in collaboration with Sports Medicine leadership, Academy Athletic Trainers, and team physicians, supporting athletes through recovery and return-to-participation activities.
  3. Maintain accurate and timely athlete medical, treatment, health-status, and participation documentation in the League-provided electronic medical record system in accordance with applicable medical privacy and documentation requirements.
  4. Provide athletic training and medical coverage for Academy training sessions, matches, travel, and other assigned team activities, and support MLS NEXT Pro or first-team coverage as business needs require.
  5. Maintain assigned medical supplies, clinical equipment, and athletic training resources, coordinating inventory and replenishment to support effective Sports Medicine operations.
  6. Communicate athlete health, treatment, rehabilitation, and participation information to appropriate Sports Medicine and team personnel in accordance with established medical protocols and confidentiality requirements.
  7. Maintain compliance with applicable MLS NEXT, MLS, U.S. Soccer, club, OSHA, medical, safety, and privacy policies and protocols.
  8. Special projects and assignments as business dictates.
  9. Responsible for the maintenance, creation and control of all personally identifiable information or any other information protected by any Confidentiality or Privacy Standards or Company Policies that you have access or knowledge of, including but not limited to any state or federal regulations including HIPAA.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited program, or equivalent education meeting BOC certification and Massachusetts licensure requirements.
  • 0–2 years of athletic training or sports medicine experience, including professional, collegiate, internship, or comparable clinical experience; soccer or elite-athlete experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of injury evaluation, emergency care, therapeutic intervention, rehabilitation, injury prevention, and return-to-participation principles.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and clinical documentation preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to work within established medical protocols and escalate complex clinical matters appropriately.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with athletes, coaches, physicians, athletic trainers, Performance staff, and other team personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple athlete-care and operational priorities in a fast-paced sports environment.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings, weekends, holidays, and nontraditional hours as required by the team schedule.
  • Professional or elite-level soccer experience preferred.
  • Spanish-language proficiency preferred, if genuinely valuable to this player population.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and provide hands-on athletic training and rehabilitation services.
  • Must be able to assist athletes with therapeutic and functional activities and move or utilize medical, rehabilitation, and athletic-training equipment consistent with the essential functions of the position.
  • Must be able to work for extended periods in indoor and outdoor training and competition environments, including varying weather conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.
  • Will work in all types of weather, including extreme heat and cold.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Current Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC) certification required.
  • Current Massachusetts Athletic Trainer license required, or ability to obtain prior to beginning employment.
  • Current CPR/AED certification for the Professional Rescuer required.
  • SafeSport Certified
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) preferred.
  • Dry Needling Certification preferred.
