  • Term: Winter Quarter / Spring Semester 2026
  • Hours: Total hours will vary depending on intern’s credits and the school’s requirements. Days/hours can be flexible to accommodate intern’s academic schedule. The ideal schedule will include 2-3 weekdays in the office and home games (beginning in March, typically Saturday nights).
About Sacramento Republic FC
Sacramento Republic FC is one of the premier clubs in USL Championship. Since 2014, the club has reflected the Indomitable nature of California’s Capital City, breaking league records year over year, winning the championship in its inaugural season, and sparking a regional passion for soccer. Owned and managed by a joint venture partnership between Wilton Rancheria and Kevin Nagle, the club will continue to invest in the city, with plans to build a Downtown soccer-specific stadium that will redefine entertainment in the growing and evolving Sacramento region. Along with its partners, Republic FC is committed to supporting various community investment programs to serve the city, use its platform to drive impact and success on and off the field, and operate the region’s only youth-to-pro soccer development academy, while also supporting the development of youth soccer players throughout Northern California. 
Position Summary
Through a Communications Internship, participants will gain valuable insight into how a sports franchise and full-service communications team works. Interns will receive first-hand experience across multiple communications disciplines, while also observing professionals at work. In the end, the intern will support the club’s communications goals, practice skills applicable beyond the sports landscape, and help prepare for a successful transition into entry-level employment.
 
Learning Objectives
  • Develop a comprehensive external awareness campaign 
  • Write for various audiences, with a concentration on media
  • Create undisputed data sets to support rhetoric in writing/campaigns
  • Identify, develop and pitch storylines to staff, partners and external media – with support. 
Key Responsibilities & Work Experience Activities
  • Develop and manage media lists 
    • Depending on topic, and target, the intern will research, curate, and build media lists that the team will use to distribute information
    • Direct learning – how to find information, create targeted lists, and build dynamic data sets. 
  • Support game preparation through data review 
    • Utilizing match data, the intern will help create narratives surrounding players/team. 
    • Direct learning – interpret data to provide media support, for stories to advance the club’s communications goals. 
  • Write match content and supporting website materials
    • The intern will practice their external communication skills by writing game recaps, developing player profiles, drafting club updates for fan/customer audiences, and preparing materials for executive staff. 
    • Direct learning – understanding audiences and sharpen writing skills 
  • Interview players, coaches, and executives 
    • The intern will gather content through interviews to help extend the club’s communications goals. 
    • Direct learning – how to obtain and properly source information 
  • Work with members of the regional media sports Corp.
    • The intern will pitch stories, help create supporting materials, and develop press kits. 
    • Direct learning – day to day practice of how to gain media coverage, resulting in the development of their own style. 
  • Utilize content production tools
    • The intern will practice simple video, photo, and document editing in part of media development. 
    • Direct learning – adding skills to toolbox that go beyond traditional PR/communications functions, but can apply as an asset in a future position. 
Qualifications
  • Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact comfortably and effectively with internal and external staff and clients at all levels of an organization.
  • Extremely coachable (i.e., responds well to constructive feedback) and eager to learn every day
  • Highly motivated and ambitious
  • Strong communication skills and sharp attention to detail
  • Knowledge of soccer preferred
  • Current enrollment at a college/university in the communications field
Schedule & Credit
The total number of hours for this internship will be determined by the intern’s university/college. The intern is responsible for coordinating with their school to confirm eligibility and obtain any required paperwork to formalize an internship agreement between Sacramento Republic FC and the school.
The work schedule will be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic commitment. Ideally, a regular schedule can be set up for the intern to work select weekday mornings, as well as on game days.
