Who are we hiring?
The Retail Buyer for the Kansas City Current will blend creative vision with strategic analysis to shape a dynamic and authentic merchandise experience that reflects the spirit of our fans and the momentum of our club. This individual, in collaboration with Director of Retail Operations and VP of Marketing, will own the retail buying strategy—balancing core product lines, exclusive collaborations, and seasonal capsules—to create collections that resonate with our market and represent the culture of women’s soccer.
Beyond curation, this role demands a data-driven mindset. The Retail Buyer will regularly analyze sales performance, fan behavior, inventory trends, and broader retail insights to inform purchasing decisions and optimize assortment planning. They will articulate the “why” behind product selections through a mix of analytics, instinct, business acumen and cultural relevance—ensuring each item has purpose and impact.
Through this unique blend of storytelling and science, the Retail Buyer will anticipate what fans want today and what they’ll want next. The Retail Buyer will work collaboratively with Retail Marketing to ensure there is a strategic plan for marketing & promotions to drive business growth. They’ll challenge vendors, elevate product quality, and partner across departments to ensure our merchandise tells the story of the Kansas City Current—on and off the pitch. Reports to the Kansas City Current Director of Retail Operations.
What will you do?
- Manage inventory for assigned categories from concept to store
- Ensure on hand inventory levels are maintained by department, by location – maximizing growth and minimizing risk
- Adherent to annual sales, margin, and retail performance targets
- Set distribution plan by style for targeted categories
- Provide weekly, monthly, and annual performance metrics for assigned categories
- Partner with retail vendors on product selection and pricing initiatives
- Create a markdown and seasonal promotion strategy to drive quarterly aged & obsolete inventory sell through.
- Build strong partnerships across all entities within the KC Current ecosystem
- Source local and licensed retail product opportunities for collaboration consideration
- Maintain a competitive knowledge of both league and market
- Analyze product category & item lifecycle performance
- Extract & organize retail data tables to analyze product sell-through and on-hand performance
- Support & map retail planning models for new and/or replenishment procurement
- Identify & recommend retail pricing models for stadium, mobile and online retail
- Develop product consolidation roadmap and assortment allocations by location
What do you need to succeed?
- Bachelor’s degree in Retail Management, Marketing, Fashion Design, Business Administration or related field required
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience of retail apparel buying or assistant/associate apparel buying experience required
- Strong familiarity with high-volume retail, commercial awareness, and the ability to recognize future trends in the industry
- Previous apparel retail sales, retail store management, and/or merchandising experience required.
- Strong negotiation skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure
- Plan and set priorities with a strong attention to detail and deadlines
- High-level organizational skills with a strong attention to detail and deadlines
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and can synthesize and present complex information to senior & executive leadership audience(s).
- Strong analytical and critical thinking ability
- Solves problems by identifying, collecting, and analyzing relevant information and creating multiple possible solutions
- High degree of proficiency in MS Office Suite, Outlook & internet applications, specifically MS Excel
- Exemplifies a collaborative approach in working with management, team members, vendors, guests and team counterparts.
- Respectful of other people’s contributions and is tactful and sensitive; persuasive yet inclusive.
Special requirements of the Job:
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, inclusive of weekends, nights (event evenings & overnight operation shifts) and holidays.
- Ability to monitor company communications and respond to time-sensitive matters with senior executives.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move around the venue for extended periods of time, often during events or facility setup and breakdown.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed for event setup, equipment management, or assisting with operational needs.
- Requires occasional bending, squatting, and reaching overhead to handle various tasks related to facility management, equipment, and event preparation.
- Must be capable of working in physically demanding environments, including navigating stairs, ramps, and elevated platforms during venue conversions.
- Ability to work outdoors continuously for extended periods of time in all weather conditions
