Position Description

Each summer, The Sanneh Foundation runs free sports camps for Twin Cities youth, teaching the fundamentals in sportsmanship and life skills through various fun activities. Each summer we run approximately 100 free sports camps in the Twin Cities Metro for youth, ages 5-14. In this position, the Summer Camp Sports Coach will learn to coach, teach, and manage youth in a sporting environment. Learn leadership and team-building skills that extend beyond the field.

Number of Openings: 24

Encompassed Sports: Basketball, Soccer, Pickleball

Hours Per Week: appx. 15 - 29 hours weekly.

Preferred Availability: 3-6 hours per day, generally mornings to afternoons, or afternoons to evenings. Camp times are from 9-11:30 am, 1-3:30 pm and 6-7:30 pm.

A TYPICAL WEEK

Monday – Thursday: Summer Camp Sports Coaches will serve as youth sports coaches (soccer, basketball or pickleball) that will help to lead our junior coaching staff in running free sports camps at various Twin Cities parks, fields, and school sites (mostly outdoors). Most of our camps run 2.5 hours. Evening camps run 1.5 hours and partnership camps vary by location. There is a setup time of thirty minutes and a breakdown time of 15 minutes each camp day.

Camps run in different locations each week and can be scheduled for morning, afternoon, and/or evening sessions. It is a prerequisite that Summer Camp Sports Coaches have a sports-specific background in the sport they coach.

Friday: Our Summer Camp Sports Coaches will participate in youth leadership and professional development training. Using their Monday-Thursday ‘hands-on’ experience as leaders/role-models to younger kids (campers) as a platform for discussion, our weekly leadership training helps to build upon, cultivate, and nurture/grow each Summer Camp Sports Coach’s “leader within.” Training each Friday covers approximately 4-6 hours and will take place at either Conway Recreation Center in St. Paul or at a location that is to be determined.

*Camp locations vary each week and in some cases, TSF Camp Leadership and Summer Camp Sports Coaches may meet at a centrally convenient location for morning pick-ups.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Mentoring players to develop sportsmanship and respect for the game.
  • Planning and leading practice sessions.
  • Creating a safe environment designed to keep youth healthy & mitigate risks of injury.
  • Focus on playing fair and adhering to organization’s code of conduct.
  • Understanding of the rules and regulations governing the sport.
  • Motivating players to improve.

A TYPICAL DAY

  • Schedules are assigned or self-selected 1–3 days before each week; coaches work 1–2 camps/day, not exceeding 29.5 hours/week.

  • Arrive 30 minutes before camp starts or coordinate a ride with Camp Leadership.

  • Clock in using the ADP Payroll App on TSF iPads upon arrival.

  • Lead a group of ~25 kids and supervise Youth Coaches with support from Camp Leadership.

  • Follow the play-based curriculum and ensure camper safety—physically and emotionally.

  • Wrap up with life skills discussion, clean up, and load equipment into vans after camp.

  • After camp: either clock out or take a 1-hour unpaid lunch (meals may be provided).

  • Clock out via ADP before leaving; failure to do so defaults your time to camp end, without breakdown time included.

Preferred Education & Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have sport-specific background as a player and/or coach.
  • Desire to work in a growing nonprofit organization with a strong commitment to the organization’s mission.
