Position Summary

The Senior Accountant and Business Operations Administrator is involved in all aspects of the accounting and general ledger of the organization.

This role is responsible for providing advanced accounting support, assisting with all periodic close processes by reconciling and analyzing financial data, identifying trends, and delivering insights to support data-driven decision-making.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, strategic thinker who is well-versed, confident, and comfortable with balance sheet reconciliations, internal controls, and compliance. This person thrives in dynamic, fast-paced environments and has a strong focus on process improvement and operational structure.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of MLS NEXT Pro reporting, including post-game and annual league financial reports.
  • Oversee and manage the accounts payable process, ensuring timely payments to vendors.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including:
    • Analyzing and reconciling general ledger accounts
    • Preparing and uploading journal entries
    • Reconciling subledger to general ledger balances
    • Ensuring accruals are properly assessed for cut-off and recorded
    • Ensuring revenue is recognized in accordance with applicable accounting standards and that deferred revenue balances are accurately maintained and reported
  • Maintain fixed asset roll-forward schedules and support accounting for acquisitions, capitalization, changes in useful lives, dispositions, and impairments.
  • Support the annual budget process through detailed variance analysis.
  • Assist with internal control evaluations and provide insight on potential risk areas.
  • Support audit preparation, including responding to audit requests.
  • Assist with tax-related filings.
  • Handle ad hoc financial and operational requests.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and contribute to streamlining accounting operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor/Management.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience in an accounting-related role (public or corporate accounting preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • Solid understanding of:
    • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
    • Month-end close processes
    • Basic tax compliance
    • Internal controls
    • Variance analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with intermediate Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build positive working relationships internally and externally.
  • Self-starter who is self-motivated and capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills with a focus on process improvement.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Sage 50 or similar accounting software.
  • Experience with Michigan tax filings.
